Since its start, 2020 has not been good to us. Nobody was certain about the adverse circumstances that were on their way. Corona Virus has caused a great setback to our lives in unusual ways and lockdowns have resulted in crumbling economies. In Pakistan, it has affected a large number of individuals, especially the daily wagers. Numerous people have lost their jobs, resulting in no sources of income. Amidst these adverse circumstances, people have jumped into the battlefield to help the affected families in fighting these circumstances. The following are several heros whose efforts have been remained noticeable since the start of the pandemic.
Shahid Afridi Foundation:
Founded in 2014 by the former captain of Pakistan’s Cricket Team, Shahid Afridi, SAF has been working tirelessly with a mission to enhance the conditions of unprivileged people with regards to Healthcare, Education, and Water access. With the outset of the pandemic, this organization was one of the first for creating awareness and campaigning about COVID-19. A campaign called “To Fight Corona, Donate Karo Na” using hashtags “#StayHomeToSaveLives” and “#DonateKarona” was started. Under this campaign, led by Shahid Afridi, hundreds of rations bags and sanitation packs were distributed among families. During provision of his services, he himself was tested positive for Corona Virus, and luckily defeated it by the grace of Almighty.
Zaffar Abbas and JDC:
A hero for Karachities is Zafar Abbas, General Secretary of Jafaria Disaster Management Cell (JDC). Founded in 2009, JDC is an NGO, providing basic necessities to the people of Karachi. From the start of the pandemic, Zafar Abbas has been distributing ration bags, containing oil, flour, pulses, etc. to needy people, especially the daily wagers, who have been affected the most due to COVID-19 and lockdown. He ensures that no one sleeps with an empty stomach. His organization has two Dasterkhwans in Karachi that cater free food to people 24/7. His organization provides ration to thousands of people on daily basis at their doorstep.
Edhi Foundation, founded by Abdul Sattar Edhi, is the award-winning and one the oldest and best organizations, providing unique services to the people such as shelter for disabled, orphans, destitute, and provision of free hospitals and ambulance services, etc. Son of Edhi, known as Faisal Edhi, continues to provide its top-notch services to people all over the country in the COVID-19 outbreak. In spite of no availability of protective gears for the volunteers in the start, Edhi foundation was on front-line in the war against COVID-19, providing free ambulance and other services to the COVID-19 patients. During rendering these services, Faisal Edhi was tested positive for Corona Virus twice. Fortunately, he has recovered from it now.
Not only these are our Pandemic Heros, but a number of other people have jumped on the bandwagon. Someone said it perfectly that not all heroes wear capes! Let’s take a moment and acknowledge the efforts people are putting by risking their lives during this pandemic and are at the frontline in the war against corona.
